How Can severe Jaw Pain Be Treated?

I had what it felt like was a toothache on my back tooth on right side and I went to the dentist and took an exray and he said it didn't look like there was anything wrong with my teeth.. I had the worst pain on the side of my face and now it is a very bad ache on the side of my jaw. I can't eat anything cause of the pain. I am a 69 year old female.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain in case if pain in jaw is not due to any decayed teeth then it can be most probably due to disorders with the jaw joint leading to TMJ or TMD..

I would therefore suggest you to consult an Oral Physician/ Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination and a Panoromic x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

As of now you can take a combination of anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen and muscle relaxant like Chlorzoxasone..
You should take a soft diet and avoid hard foods..
You should avoid opening the mouth too wide like during yawning..
Massage the sides of face and jaw in round gentle motions of finger tips..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
